Baby Shower Games For Your Special Baby Shower

Baby Shower Games For Your Special Baby Shower

So you’re holding a baby shower? Then you will need baby shower games to keep the guests entertained. While the baby shower is a good time to pamper the mom-to-be and make her feel very special there are also a number of guests that need to be kept happy for the duration of the event. Our focus here is on baby shower games, since these are always the most memorable part of any baby shower.

Games: Silly and Entertaining

Baby shower games can be both silly and entertaining by overall they should be plain old fun. Some are intended to embarrass the mom-to-be, but others can really be fun and may even teach the guests something. The promise of a prize, even something token like, always adds to the enjoyment too.

Games can be a great way to get guests to mingle at a shower especially if they don’t know each other and it is also a great ice breaker. Here are some ideas for choosing the right baby shower games:

In the planning stages of the baby shower, be sure to discuss potential game ideas with the mom-to-be. She may have some definite dislikes when it comes to baby shower games, and since it’s her day, you want to be sure to plan something she’ll enjoy and be very comfortable with.

Planning An Icebreaker Games

Plan the first baby shower game for early in the party because it can make for a great icebreaker, so try to schedule it for just after everyone arrives but just before the main food courses and gift opening.

Pick a game that is connected to your theme.

Whatever your decorating and food plans, you can tie it all together with a well-chosen game in the same theme.

Prepare in advance.

If your game requires writing, be sure you’ve gathered up enough pens and pencils beforehand. And the same thing goes for other objects: have it all ready to go so guests don’t have to wait.

Choose creative but inexpensive prizes as token items for guests.

The fun of the game should be in the playing, but it’s nice to have a prize and enters a little competitive spirit.

Take pictures during the baby shower game. They make great additions to a mom’s scrapbook and as a long term keepsake for the baby.

Choose Easy Baby Shower Games.

Games should be easy to explain and easy to play. Anything confusing or difficult takes all the fun out of it and people get bored before the game even begins.

So now that you know how to plan for the shower games, here are some of the more popular shower games for you to incorporate into your event:

Guessing the Baby Food

Remove the labels from a few jars of baby food after marking the lids by numbers. Make a list of the contents of each jar. Each person has to taste the food and try to guess what it is ? pear, potato, custard, beef etc. Let everyone write down the number from the jar and what they think is in it. The person with the most correct guesses wins the game!

The Tray Baby Shower Game

Place a number of baby items on a tray. (Usually about 15-20). Slowly circle the room allowing each guest a chance to examine the items. Remove the tray from the room and see who can remember the most items on a paper in 2 minutes. Usually the items on the tray go to the expectant mom and the winner gets a small prize.

Guess the Girth

Check with the guest of honor in advance on this one. All you need is a ball or two of string. Ask guests to cut a length of string that they think will stretch around the future mom’s belly. After everyone has had a turn, the mother-to-be measures and cuts a string that fits her belly. Compare her string to all the guests’ pieces of string. The person who was closest wins a small prize. This is a great icebreaker and always good for some laughs.

Baby Picture Match Game

In advance, ask all the guests for pictures of themselves as babies. Assemble the photos on a pin up board and assign a number to each photo. At some point during the shower, pass out sheets of paper to the guests so they can match each baby to the appropriate grown-up. If the guests don’t know each other well, name tags can help the process. The person who gets the most correct answers wins.

Positive Discipline for a Happy Toddler

mother and baby
by Nancy Samalin

When we hurt, insult or label someone we love, whose character is just starting to form, we’re obviously not helping their self-esteem.

Discipline and self-esteem have an important connection, especially when talking about toddlers.

“When you punish, slap, spank or yell, is it working? It’s not just that you’re saying something negative that makes a child feel bad about himself but we also need to realize that it doesn’t work.” says Nancy Samalin, M.S. and founding director of Parent Guidance Workshops in New York City.

A Practical Approach

An internationally acclaimed speaker and author of 3 popular books, Nancy Samalin educates and helps parents get along with kids. Nancy says “I think the emphasis should be on practical rather than theoretical approaches.”

Ms. Samalin’s books do not tell parents what they “should” do but offer concrete information that they can use immediately in the here and now.
Children not only learn by what we tell them; that is why it is so important that parents become educated in the ways to deal effectively with young children in a positive way, so as to form a foundation for their healthy self esteem.

Parents of toddlers often use the word “no” too much.

“Save the ‘no’s for serious stuff,”

Nancy Samalin advises parents, “and keep in mind that toddlers have a limited vocabulary. Set limits on hurtful and dangerous behavior and let the small stuff go.” Giving the toddler more areas that are childproof means less need to constantly admonish and correct the child. Limited rules are necessary, but are rarely respected by young children. And it’s exhausting for a parent to be spending all of her time trying to enforce too many rules.

How to understand toddlers deliberate behavior and unintentional behavior.

Deliberate behaviors are unacceptable such as biting, hitting or purposely spilling milk. When parents assume that kids are misbehaving on purpose they are bound to get angry. Some behavior is age-appropriate.

“Discipline can be defined as the ability to set limits (which all kids need and very few want) without putting them down or making them feel bad about themselves,” says Nancy Samalin. Getting messages across clearly and simply without putting your child down (i.e.telling them that something is wrong with them) is key to your child’s confidence and esteem.

Avoid Labels

Nancy Samalin speaks about the power of words. “We speak the least care to the people we care the most about.” For the toddler whose character is still developing, we need to avoid labelling him or telling him what’s wrong with him. Mrs. Samalin says to try the “I’m mad vs.your bad” concept.

“For example, as seeing your child spill milk on purpose, you don’t want to say ‘you’re so messy’ but you can say ‘I don’t like that.’ Or talk about the milk: say ‘we drink milk, not pour it on the floor’. Using the word ‘you’ plus a negative word is saying to a child that something is wrong with you.”

When we talk this way children can’t help but feel as though they’re not ok or that they are a disappointment to their parents. Words, tone and expressions are picked up on by the toddler. “We need to use our words carefully,” says Samalin .

Turning Negative to Positive

For example, one mistake that parents often make is asking a child who is jumping on the table “What are you doing?”. It’s obvious the child isn’t about to tell you! You might say “no jumping on the table” or just remove them from the table.

You might even turn this unacceptable behavior into a positive experience by taking the child and saying “the floor is where we jump. I know how much you like to jump. So let’s jump together.” Offering an alternative is an effective way to redirect misbehavior.

Nancy knows that all parents no matter how loving get mad at their kids. Getting angry especially at toddlers is inevitable. The goal is to express anger without hurting your child (Love and Anger, Chapter 9).

Parents Need Time Out Too

Any parent of a toddler is familiar with the term “time out” “which offers a child a chance to cool down. But time out shouldn’t only be for kids. For a parent who is very angry and about to hit or insult her child, a time out, too, is beneficial.” Whereas discipline is teaching and guiding, punishment is different in that it hurts children whether physically or emotionally.

A parent needs to consider the importance of acknowledging good behavior, not just focus on the negative. “Whenever a child does something helpful or thoughtful be sure to say something specific or even hug them,” says Samalin. “Saying something as simple as ‘I like that’ or ‘I admire that’ is important. Point out the positive in a concrete way.”

When a child’s behavior is pleasing, a parent often believes a reward reinforces the act.

“The best reward for a young child should be your approval and your delight in them. Parents often believe a reward has to be something material. The best reward to give your child is your time.” This is tough today because parents are so busy.

Little things such as letting the answering machine pick up the phone while reading to a child is reinforcing that they are important. Reading with a child is one of the best activities you can share with them. The one on one closeness emphasizes how important they are.

“Read the book with enthusiasm and read a book that you enjoy as well,” advises Samalin. Many parents believe that lots of sports and numerous activities are essential to their young child’s confidence and esteem, whether their child wants to be there or not.  It’s not unusual today to hear of toddlers in dance, art, soccer or karate classes. Many parents have their kids over-scheduled, going from appointment to appointment.

Don’t Over Schedule

“Parents push too much. Children don’t have to be occupied every minute of the day,” Samalin says “they need lots of downtime.” Mrs. Samalin reminds parents that child does not need a room full of toys nor to be glued to a television set for hours at a time (please don’t keep a television in your child’s room).

When asked how to spot or know if a toddler’s esteem is healthy, Nancy Samalin gave this simple definition “A healthy toddler is a child who is able to be silly, funloving, full of laughter and energy.”

When it comes to esteem and your toddler, Nancy reminds parents of the one thing children need most – to have the adults in their lives enjoy them as they are and not as they wish they would be.

“A child’s self-esteem grows from the delight he sees in our eyes.”

Nancy Samalin is the author of LOVING YOUR CHILD IS NOT ENOUGH – Positive Discipline That Works, LOVE AND ANGER: The Parental Dilemma and LOVING EACH ONE BEST – A Caring and Practical Approach to Raising Siblings.

The Great Baby Name Debate

pregnant woman

Winifred or Willow? Thomas or Troy? The name you choose for your child will last a lifetime. Whether you’re looking for something original that will stand out from the crowd or a traditional name , choosing a name for your new baby is a huge responsibility.

It goes without saying that you as the parents must like the name. Names that hold bad associations for you are out (Jeremy was a bore at school, you can’t stand Bella in the Tweenies).  If you consider your own name uninteresting, you may wish to choose something more exotic – or vice versa.

First and Surname Combinations

Think carefully about combinations of first name and surname. Are they compatible? You may like a mixture of an unusual first name with a more familiar surname (Zara Phillips)  But be careful about rhyming the two names – Mark Clarke won’t thank you for it. Beware initials that could cause hilarity to your child’s future friends – Ethan Thomas or Peter Oliver Ogilvie won’t be joining in the giggles! Trying to be clever can also cause grief – Poppy Fields or Summer Winters may sound cute at the time, but can eventually grate on everyone’s nerves!

If she’s called Grace, will she turn out to be butter-fingered? Will Maximus grow into a Mr. Puniverse? Is Jordan a boy or a girl? What will Elizabeth grow up as? Lizzie? Beth? Liza? And as for Ashleigh, Ashley, Ashlee, Ashlea and Ashlie – all in circulation at the moment – how is anyone supposed to find a name that is both special and appropriate?

Sources of Inspiration

Fortunately, sources of inspiration can be found everywhere. You can avoid the throng of Chloes, Emilys, Jacobs and Jacks topping the baby name charts for the past few years.   You can choose from a huge variety of names collected in specialist books and on the Internet.

Some parents prefer biblical names – Rebecca, Abigail, Joshua, Samuel, and Joseph are all very popular at the moment. Names inspired by nature include Blossom, Lily or Skye and even Tiger for boys. Place names (Paris, Lamorna), colors (Coral, Ebony), astronomy, music, and sport – all provide a wealth of ideas and choice.

Twin Names

Naming twins presents its own set of challenges. You may wish to link the names in some way using the same first letter (Jack and Jill?). Or a theme such as Liberty and Faith, or even similar names like Leo and Eleonora. However, you might end up having two very independent children who don’t wish to be connected by name as well as birthday.

A less obvious connection involves using different names with similar meanings such as Columba and Jemima (both meaning dove), or Jonathan and Matthew (gift of God).

For those of us who still haven’t decided even when the stork delivers, the arrival of your newborn may give you all the inspiration you need! Christmas babies often appear as Noel or Noelle, Natalie or Natasha. Nighttime births produce star-inspired names such as Stella, Esther or Sterling.  For thankful parents after a difficult birth, Nathaniel (gift of God), Abigail (father’s joy) or Miranda (wonderful) might fit the bill.

So whether you plump for Clifford or Condor, Harriet or Harmony, above all have fun choosing that special name.  With careful thought, your child will grow up bearing a name you can all be proud of!
